Managing the HSE Enforcement Expectation for Welding Fume

Updated: Jun 7, 2023

Following the statement from HSE ( Health and Safety Executive) and how you can manage the new enforcement for your workforce.

The HSE Enforcement for welding fume states there has been new scientific evidence from International Agency for Research on Cancer, that exposure to all welding fume, including mild steel welding fumes, can cause lung cancer and limited evidence linking it to kidney cancer in humans. The Workplace Health Expert Committee has endorsed the reclassification of mild steel welding fume as a human carcinogen.

With immediate effect, businesses will need to ensure any exposure to all welding fumes released is controlled using fume extraction units. Ensure they are provided for all welding activities no matter the duration of the weld.

To help you manage the new enforcement from HSE we have a range of Kemper Fume Extraction Units to fit every welding application.

Our team have the knowledge and support from Kemper to help find the right fume extraction for your needs. Many factors can decide what fume extraction unit will be best for your applications. Whether you need a mobile filter unit, stationary extraction, high vacuum extraction or central extraction system.

Mobile Filter Units:

Kemper mobile filter units are perfect for workplaces where welding takes place in different areas of the business. Depending on the model, Kemper units are suitable for occasional to permanent use. They are flexible due to their high mobility and operating radius of 360 degrees and contain disposable filters from 13 m² to 42 m² or cleanable filters as required.

Stationary Extraction:

Perfect for a workplace with fixed-position welding in production halls. They are connected to extraction hoods, tables and robot cells via pipelines. These are space-saving extraction units due to being wall mounted and in turn don't get in the way of welding booths and are available with disposable filters or automatic filter cleaning for what works best for your applications.

High vacuum extraction:

These high vacuum extraction units have been designed for individual workplaces, units for groups of up to four workplaces, right up to systems for welding torch extraction in large welding shops. With units for on-torch extraction such as the VacuFil extraction unit for medium quantities of welding fume and dust.

Central Extraction:

The WeldFil and WeldFil Compact welding fume extraction units are equipped with filter cartridges and are suitable for setting up central extraction systems. For example, for welding shops, grinding shops, training facilities, robot lines or for operation at our extraction tables

Not sure what will work best for your workplace? We can help you find the right solutions for your needs, whether it be mobile filter units or stationary systems. We will conduct a site extraction survey that will allow us and Kemper to understand where you need the extraction and how much extraction you need.
